The Rio Calendasco and the network of green areas as an ecological/cultural infrastructure in the Hamlet of the village
The project proposal concerns Calendasco (PC), a riverside municipality on the Po, the "gateway to Emilia" for pilgrims on the Via Francigena. It involves 3 green spaces totaling 6,012.29 sq m and 850.44 sq m of currently asphalted areas to be transformed into draining surfaces. Specifically, it aims to:
requalify and reactivate currently underutilized green areas in the north-east part of the town, adjacent to historic buildings undergoing regeneration and energy efficiency improvements with NRRP and regional funds – the castle, the former castle stables (future library and pilgrim accommodation), "G. Gozzano" school, and public housing in Viale Matteotti – to make them even greener and more comfortable thanks to the ecosystem services provided by vegetation. Other built spaces, currently disused, will be de-concreted to return them to their natural state.
requalify Viale Matteotti, to make it a "green path" connecting the ancient Via Francigena (today Via Roma) and the three main "poles" of the town: educational (the school), social (public housing), and cultural (castle and stables).
apply nature-based solutions and allow the rediscovery of the collective historical memory of the village, particularly that linked to the castle and the Rio Calendasco, through the renaturalization and requalification works.

The call for proposals
The project is one of the 20 Operations of Strategic Importance - Europe 27 Projects, funded by the call for proposals Design and construction of blue-green infrastructures in urban and peri-urban areas, with resources from the ERDF Regional Program 2021-2027, in implementation of Priority 2 - Sustainability, decarbonization, biodiversity and resilience, Specific Objective 2.7 - Strengthen nature protection and conservation, biodiversity and green infrastructure, including the one in urban areas, and reduce all forms of pollution, Action 2.7.1.
